“Is our children learning?” as George W. Bush so famously asked. Well, no, they is not learning, especially the history of their country, the school subject at which America’s young perform at their worst.
On history tests given to 31,000 pupils by the National Assessment of Education Progress, the “Nation’s Report Card,” most fourth-graders could not identify a picture of Abraham Lincoln or a reason why he was important.
Most eighth-graders could not identify an advantage American forces had in the Revolutionary War. Twelfth-graders did not know why America entered World War II or that China was North Korea’s ally in the Korean War.
Only 20 percent of fourth-graders attained even a “proficient” score in the test. By eighth grade, only 17 percent were judged proficient. By 12th grade, 12 percent. Only a tiny fraction was graded “advanced,” indicating a superior knowledge of American history.
As these were multiple-choice questions, notes Diane Ravitch, the education historian, the answer “was right in front of them.”
But if the generations coming out of our schools do not know our past, do not who we are or what we have done as a people, how will they come to love America, refute her enemies or lead her confidently?
Doesn’t just end in our school systems. The main stream media does not report news that Americans need. The talking heads the majority of the time stay away from real issues.
Turn on the television today, and you will undoubtedly hear the voice of mainstream newscasters reassuring you that the safety and security of you and your loved ones is being taken care of by your government, so much so that they are preparing to go to war on your behalf. Don’t worry, they’ll tell you, the military will eliminate the “threats” before they can even become threats! Just go about your daily life, spend your money (credit gladly accepted), and trust that your tax dollars are where they need to be — protecting you from bogeymen, the ones who so selfishly refuse to bend to this so-called Western-style “democracy”. Engaged citizens across the globe are proving that we will not acquiesce quietly to the militarized media machine. Ever increasingly, people are waking up to the fact that tyranny, repression and exploitation are not and should never be the norm. Another way is possible.
Most Americans believe the lie that the mainstream media is “fair and balanced” and is looking out for the interests of average Americans. Well, that simply is not true. Those in the mainstream media serve those that are providing them with paychecks. The reality is that just 6 gigantic corporations collectively own most of the major mainstream media outlets in this country.
Reporters are simply not going to be allowed to report stories that are severely damaging to those corporations or to the owners of those corporations. In addition, reporters are simply not going to be allowed to report stories that are severely damaging to those that spend millions of dollars on advertising (such as pharmaceutical companies) on those mainstream media outlets.
At this point, our “news” is absolutely packed with propaganda. Way too often, things are not what they seem to be on television. The mainstream media lies, lies and then lies some more. They give us the version of “reality” that their owners want us to have.
This video below gives a glimpse of the knowledge of our “average American”.
